1. Distinct head lacking; olive-brown slime merely covering a portion of the upper stalk;
stalk pinkish-red to orangish (or white); sac-like volva at base of stalk
3. Stalk pinkish red to pinkish-orange, gracefully tapered from middle toward apex; slimy spore
mass covering upper 1/3 or ½ of stalk (up to 6 cm) ....................................................Mutinus elegans
3. Stalk white to pink to pinkish-red, tapered abruptly at apex; slimy spore mass covering only the upper
¼ or less (2-3 cm) of the stalk......................................................................................Mutinus caninus
