Alumni Appreciation AwardRecognizes significant service to Messiah College 2001 Recipient Robert '51 & Marilyn (Byer U'51) Smith Married on July 2, 1957, Robert and Marilyn Smith have been dedicated supporters of Messiah College throughout their lifetime. Most recently, robert and Marilyn were co-chairpersons of the Climenhaga Homestead and McBeth Alumni Center project, which provides space for the Office of Alumni Relations and several guest suites. They serve on the Messiah College Alumni Council, of which Robert spent several years as chair. Additionally, the Smiths sponsor projects that benefit the Messiah College community, most notably the Excellence in Teaching Award and Smith Intern Program. By sponsoring academically gifted students to work with Messiah College professors, the Smiths enhance both the community and scholarship of the College. Robert holds medical licenses from Pennsylvania and New Mexico. Currently, Robert is an attending psychiatrist at the Friends Hospital of Philadelphia. A registered nurse, Marilyn has practiced in many sectors of the medical community, including hospitals, public schools, and retirement centers. Active volunteers in community organizations throughout their lifetime, the Smiths have served as Sunday school teachers and committee members in various churches. Marilyn was the organist for several congregations and is currently a deacon of the Souderton Brethren in Christ church, where the Smiths are loyal members. Robert directed the choir of the Lancaster Brethren in Christ church during the 1960's. The couple resides in Souderton, Pennsylvania. |
