Dr. D. Wayne CasselAlumni Appreciation Award
Recognizes significant service to Messiah College

2003 Recipient
Dr. D. Wayne Cassel '57

D. Wayne Cassel '57 transformed his vision for Messiah College into reality throughout his career.

When Cassel arrived at Messiah in 1962 as an instructor in mathematics and physics, the College lacked a formal mathematics program. He led the effort to create the curriculum and structure for the mathematics department. He always had a good vision of where the department ought to go, says Barry DeRoos, assistant professor of computer science and Cassel's long-time friend and colleague.

Through his connection with the mathematics community, Cassel became aware of the new field of computing during the late 1970s. He introduced the new subject to his colleagues and students, initiating the computer revolution on campus. He served as the College's director of computing services until the development of full-time information technology services.

Cassel also brought his vision to various administrative positions. He served as chair of the department of mathematical services for 25 years and held the titles of College registrar and interim dean during his 38-year career.

"Messiah has been my whole life for which I am eternally grateful," says Cassel, a statement especially appropriate because his three children and their spouses all graduated from the College.

Though now retired, Cassel continues to serve the College and lend his vision toward its continued legacy of educational excellence.
