2002 Recipient
Mrs. Miriam K. Stern '45
Whether serving in Zambia, Zimbabbwe, or Philadelphia, Miriam Stern always stands as an example of encouragement, connection, and hospitality. Currently living in Philadelphia, she is involved in a program through the University of Pennsylvania that allows her to work with people of other cultures and nationalities. Stern helps to teach them English and acts as a grandmother for those who need advice or someone to listen. She also provides meals, leads Bible studies, and hosts various activities in her home. In addition, she helps them become involved in Brethren in Christ churches in the Philadelphia area.
Many years spent in Africa gave Stern an international perspective. In 1952, Stern began mission work in Zambia and Zimbabwe with her late husband, Pete. Among her many roles, she planted urban churches, worked in administration, and started a hostel, called Youngways Hostel. The Sterns hosted over 60 children during a period of 12 years at this facility. She encouraged the children and helped them develop and grow during Zambia's transition from colonialism to independence. Stern lived in Africa until August 1986, when she returned to the United States. Since July 1987, she has lived and worked in Philadelphia.
