Alumni Christian Service AwardRecognizes a lifetime of faithful service. 2003 Recipient Dr. Kathleen J. (Winger) Stuebing '63 Kathy (Winger) Stuebing '63 never dreamt that she would one day pursue a doctoral degree from Harvard University after serving as a missionary in Zambia for 20 years. She found, however, that her work with African women and children raised crucial questions that only further education could help to answer. After working with women and children for many years, Kathy wanted to find the best ways to improve the health of African women and their families. In 1988, she joined Harvard professor Robert Levine in his quest to find a link between mother's education and children's physical health. Their research, which expanded into a doctoral program for Kathy, indicates that a mother's education level does indeed seem to improve the family's overall physical health, with the mother's literacy being especially influential. Armed with new knowledge, Kathy has continued equipping africans to establish women's literacy groups with the aim of improving family health. She and her husband, Rich, teach at the Theological College of Central Africa (TCCA) in Ndola, Zambia. |
