The highest and most profitable learning is this: that a man have a truthful knowledge and a full despising of himself. More, not to presume of himself, but always to judge and think well and blessedly of another, is a sign and token of great wisdom and of perfection and of singular grace.

* HOMECOMING DATE
SANCTIONED BY THE COLLEGE
Last December, The College Council took formal action to return to recognizing the third full weekend in October every year as the annual Homecoming weekend. In recent years, due to conference athletic scheduling and academic calendar issues, Homecoming weekend was forced to "float" from year to year. Committing to a particular weekend on an annual basis will help both alumni and on-campus departments to plan ahead.

* ALUMNI RESPONSE
TO AIMEE MANN CONCERT
Approximately seventy alumni sent e-mails to the Office of Alumni Relations expressing their viewpoints regarding the Student Activity Board (SAB) decision to host Aimee Mann for an on-campus concert in December. Alumni opinion was evenly divided in its support of whether or not SAB made the appropriate decision when an off-campus organization, Rock For Life, alleging that Mann was a pro-abortion activist, called for cancellation of the concert.

A slight majority (52%) agreed with SAB’s decision to hold the concert citing such reasons as it is appropriate for the College to engage the culture by allowing differing perspectives to be expressed and that the personal viewpoints of visiting artists should not necessarily be a primary consideration in scheduling them on campus. 48% of alumni disagreed expressing concern over SAB’s booking of secular artists for performances on campus, while others agreed that if indeed Mann is a pro-abortion activist, the concert should have been cancelled.

The Office of Alumni Relations forwarded the sentiments of all alumni responses onto the SAB and appropriate College administrators. On the occasion when significant debate occurs on campus - - particularly as it relates to situations that engage our external community, we will seek to provide factual information and an appropriate process for alumni communication.

For a full recap of the Aimee Mann appearance, visit www.messiah.edu/news/amann.shtml .

GENERAL CAMPUS NEWS **************************************

* THANKFUL FOR 2002
Just as many take the holiday season to reflect over the past year and God’s blessings in their lives, so too, we reflect upon and remember His blessings in the life of Messiah College this past year. In a recent letter to friends of Messiah College, President Sawatsky mentioned many things he is thankful for, including:

- A positive spirit of celebration and joy on-campus that has been noted and admired by colleagues from other institutions.

- The largest class in history, 669 seniors graduated on May 18, 2002.

- The largest freshman class (763) and the largest student body in our history (2,890) enrolled this fall.

- Five new deans of our five new schools are now in full force.

- Fourteen new faculty joined us for the current school year.

- Nearly one-tenth of our student body now is a "minority" or international student and this growing diversity enriches our campus culture.

- The structure for a new 95,000 square foot academic building is nearly enclosed and the foundation for a new 35,000 square foot student union building has begun.

- The Oakes Museum, featuring a state-of-the-art natural history exhibit, officially opened to the public on October 26 and thousands toured the facility in the first few weeks.

- Three new trustees joined the board this past fall.

- Last spring, the women’s basketball team posted the highest average GPA among NCAA Division III teams in the nation for the second year in a row.

- Our Fall 2002 Athletic teams post the most remarkable season in school history with the men’s soccer team winning the NCAA Division III national championship and field hockey and women’s soccer finishing as national first runners-up.

- A Lilly Endowment Grant of $2 million over five years is assisting the College in a major initiative to re-emphasize Christian vocation.

- The largest comprehensive fund-raising campaign in history, "To Serve and To Lead," is launched and proceeds extremely well through the early stages.

As President Sawatsky reflected upon reasons for the growth in numbers of students electing to enroll at Messiah, he cited that (it is due) "to the kind of Christian college Messiah already is and is increasingly becoming. Here academic excellence and profound Christian commitment are truly united."

* MESSIAH FOLKS
FEATURED IN MEDIA
Once again, Dr. Ray Crist was featured in the national media, when he appeared on the Sunday, January 12 episode of CBS-TV’s 60 Minutes.

CBS-TV also broadcast a special sports feature program on December 28, chronicling the NCAA Division II and III national championship competitions. Messiah’s field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer teams were included.

Also related to sports, Troy Sauer, a senior on the men’s championship soccer team is featured in the current issue of Sports Illustrated magazine in its "Faces in the Crowd" column. Troy scored the winning goal in the national title game.

* SYMPHONIC WINDS
RELEASES THIRD CD
The Messiah College Symphonic Winds debuted "Affirmations," its latest CD, this fall. The pieces recorded were chosen because the selections are based on sacred themes or have significant spiritual meaning.
