ALUMNI & PARENTS e-Bulletin . . . February 2006 Edition
The “To Serve and to Lead” Campaign provided facilities like the Larsen Student Union (in the above photo) and scholarship funds for current students. Highlights in this issue:
Messiah Successfully Completes Largest Campaign in its History President Kim S. Phipps announced on Wednesday, January 25, that the College has successfully completed its comprehensive campaign, “To Serve & To Lead: The Campaign for Student Enrichment,” raising $50.5 million to provide students with scholarship aid and enhanced educational resources and facilities, including a new academic building and a new student union. The campaign exceeded its $50 million goal, making it the largest campaign in the college’s history. The campaign, which ran over a five-year period, began in January 2001 and officially ended on Dec. 31, 2005. “The impact of this campaign has been transformational in the lives of Messiah College students,” said President Phipps. “From providing critical scholarship aid and much needed learning and leisure spaces for students—to creating resources for innovative academic programs and faculty development—this campaign has significantly enhanced Messiah’s ability to carry out its educational mission and equip students for lives of service, leadership and reconciliation.” Special thanks to all of the volunteers and donors who helped contribute to the success of the campaign. Messiah Hires One of America’s Top Faith-Learning Scholars President Kim S. Phipps recently announced the hiring of Dr. Richard T. Hughes as Distinguished Professor, Senior Boyer Fellow, and Director of the Lilly Project II. Hughes comes to Messiah from his role as Distinguished Professor of Religion at Pepperdine University, where he founded and directed the Pepperdine Center for Faith and Learning. Hughes has been a compelling voice in the national conversation on the significance of Christian higher education for contemporary society and has published several works including his most recent “The Vocation of a Christian Scholar: How Christian Faith Sustains the Life of the Mind,” and “Myths America Lives By.” During the Inauguration of President Phipps, he delivered an inspiring charge to the President, stating that “there is no college anywhere in America like Messiah College.” See http://www.messiah.edu/offices/president/inauguration/address/hughes.html. Messiah Receives Federal Grant to Serve At-risk Youth in Harrisburg Congressman Tim Holden announced $200,000 in federal funding for Messiah College’s Harrisburg Institute for Community Research and Collaborative Partnerships to be used for its “Youth Empowerment Initiative,” a new community-based research project that will create a citywide mentoring network for at-risk youths. For more info, see: http://www.messiah.edu/news/2005/MC-136-05.html CBS-TV Producer Lauds Messiah Athletes The Harrisburg Patriot News recently published an article containing an interview with Steve Scheer, producer of the “CBS Sports Special - Presenting Championships of the NCAA”, which aired nationally on Christmas Day. The television special chronicled a “behind the scenes look” at many teams who were involved in national championship competition including Messiah’s field hockey and men’s and women’s soccer teams. Scheer’s comments included… “Messiah is like the Duke (University) of Division III. That school is always in some kind of title game.” “We had a lot of fun watching them prepare for their championships. The school has great people and classy leadership and student athletes.” “…it was a joy to watch the field hockey team singing songs in the locker room. One player was playing a guitar. This is a totally positive show, and it seems like every year Messiah is in it, smelling like a rose.” [Editor’s note: The TV show portrayed both field hockey and women’s soccer teams singing worship songs and interviewed another athlete as to why she was having devotions on the team bus. If you missed the television broadcast and would like to receive a copy, please contact the Alumni & Parent Relations Office at either alumni@messiah.edu or parent@messiah.edu .] Inauguration Chapel Transcript Now Available Online Arguably one of the most compelling addresses offered during Inauguration Week was the Rev. Dr. Nathan D. Baxter’s chapel message, “Created & Called for Community” based on John 13:35. Some excerpts… “…as Christians we are called to be a community whose mark of uniqueness is not found in our agreements or homogeneity of culture and background, nor dogmas or orthodoxy, or distinctions of academic disciplines. Rather the truest Christian distinction is how we live with our differences!” “…are we satisfied with just being right or do we aspire to be like Jesus? Our society is filled with arrogant, combative, win/lose Christians and Christian communities who seem to the world the same as any secular political community.” “…Only the Amazing Grace of Agape, the transforming love of God revealed in Jesus Christ can make a unique witness to the world. Only when commitment to the spirit of Jesus Christ is more fundamental to our witness than our dogma, creeds, or doctrinal statements will we be revealed to the world as a Christian community.” “…President Phipps can lead a college of academic and administrative and student and governance leaders who wish to be a community! But no one can lead an institution which has decided not to live with one another.” “…So, Messiah, what kind of academic Christian community do you choose to be? How do you want the world to see you?” For a full transcript of Rev. Baxter’s chapel message, please see http://www.messiah.edu/offices/president/inauguration/address/chapel.html .
