Athletic NCAA Competition
Following an outstanding spring season of competition in conference championships, various Messiah sports teams have headed onto NCAA Tournament competition.
Messiah's softball team competed in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season after winning the conference championship then headed to NCAA Div. III Regional Championship hosted by Ithaca College where the Falcons defeated Keuka by a 6-1 score. The championship win places Messiah in the Div. III College World Series for the fourth time in school history. Messiah has competed in the World Series in 1998, 1999 and more recently in 2009, winning their first National Championship in program history. The Falcons have their sights set high as they enter into the College World Series. You can see a complete bracket and all the information on the championships at NCAA.com and the following link - http://www.ncaa.com/sports/softball/d3.
The Falcons first game is set for this Friday vs. DePauw University. All games will be played in Salem, Virginia. If you can't come out in person, we hope you will follow us via the live video stream (go to the above link). Please cheer on the Falcons as we make a run for another National Championship title!
The women's lacrosse team won their third MAC Championship over rival Elizabethtown College and hosted Denison University last week on Anderson Field in NCAA Tournament First Round play. Messiah advanced to an NCAA Second Round game for only the second time in the 15-year history of the program facing Franklin & Marshall last Saturday where the host Diplomats concluded Messiah’s NCAA Tournament run via a 7-4 defeat snapping the Falcons’ 14-game winning streak.
The Falcons' baseball team captured the fourth Commonwealth Conference Championship in school history. The team faced Kean University on May 19
and was defeated. The loss was the Falcons’ second straight in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, thus eliminating them from the double-elimination playoff tournament.
Messiah's women's track and field team did the unthinkable at Starry Field on May 7, winning their sixth straight MAC Outdoor Championship! The senior members of that team concluded their careers with an incredible accomplishment, going eight for eight in MAC Indoor and Outdoor Championship meets -- winning every single one.
Messiah head coach Dale Fogelsanger was honored with his sixth consecutive MAC Women’s Coach of the Year. Messiah's men's track and field team finished fourth out of 11 teams. It remains to be seen which individual athletes will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held May 26-28 in Delaware, Ohio.
Be sure to stay tuned to www.GoMessiah.com. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes on arguably the most successful spring sports' season in the history of Messiah College!
