Karen Asenavage

My vocational journey has been unusual but God certainly knows what He is doing. I began as an Art and Science major at Messiah but graduated in 1980 with a degree in Biology, as well as a collection of additional courses in chemistry and education. I also had the opportunity to work as a paraprofessional in the then Natural Sciences Department for several years after graduation. I went on to complete a Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Ball State University in Indiana .  Since then, I have used both degrees to work in tertiary educational positions that involve English for Specific Purposes.

From 1994-1997, I worked as an instructor at the United Arab Emirates University in the English for Specific Purposes Unit, working with the Agriculture and Nutrition, Science and Engineering Departments.  I soon became the Coordinator of that program.  In 2000, I was hired by the Women's Higher Colleges of Technology in Al Ain as the Health Sciences Supervisor.  In this position, I have supervised the Medical Laboratory Technology and Health Information Management Programs.  I also have worked closely with the community, local hospitals and clinics in program design and development.

I was instrumental in the development of the B. Sc in Medical Laboratory Technology at the United Arab Emirates University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This is the first joint program of the United Arab Emirates University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Higher Colleges of Technology. My background in Biology continues to serve me as I sit on the Board of the Oasis Hospital, a TEAM Mission hospital located in Al Ain.

My vocational path with a Biology degree has not been traditional, but the education I received at Messiah College and God's leading have provided me with wonderful opportunities I could never have planned on my own.  What a mighty God we serve!
