School of Health & Natural Sciences Alumni Profiles
Melissa J. Peterson Employer: Enterprise Foundation Graduated: December, 2000 Greetings from the Pacific Northwest ! After graduating from the Department of Biological and Natural Sciences in December 2000 I headed to Far North Queensland, Australia to teach college-level ornithology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). From this position I moved back to Philadelphia , but my Oregon roots did not hold me on the East Coast for long. In August of 2001 I returned to my hometown of Portland , Oregon to pursue my Masters' in Urban and Regional Planning at Portland State University . During my studies I worked at Oregon 's Population Research Center as a GIS analyst and oversaw a computer lab for the university. I completed my Masters' degree in June 2005, and in celebration of the accomplishment I took six weeks to walk across Spain along El Camino de Santiago. It was an incredible journey, despite the blisters (see photo)! Upon my return to Portland , I started working at the Enterprise Foundation, a national nonprofit organization specializing in affordable housing development. I am the Green Communities Coordinator, overseeing sustainable, healthy, environmentally sensitive ("green") affordable housing development within the region. This is a new emphasis for the organization, and it is exciting to be involved in the development of such an innovative and inspiring program. |
