Phil Thuma '70
Major: Chemistry
Career: Pediatric specialist at Macha Mission Hospital, director of Malaria Institute at Macha, senior associate of the faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, senior research fellow and lecturer at Messiah College
Residence: Choma, Zambia
"God put a burden on my heart for the children of frica. Since malaria has been the number-one cause of death in African children for many years, I became involved with malaria research in an effort to find ways to decrease the disease burden caused by this infection. While this has been a challenge, it has been extremely satisfying to see the number of malaria diseases and deaths coming down at Macha in the last few years, and that gives hope to me that this disease can be conquered!"
