Messiah College Disability Services began the use of transcriber services in the fall of 2002 in response to student need. The Typewell system of transcribing was implemented at that time.

The transcriber types a transcript of the class on a laptop that is connected to the student's laptop computer. Typewell uses abbreviations to aid in the process. The abbreviations do not show on the student computer. The student is able to participate in class "real time." The transcriber types "meaning-for-meaning" rather than "word-for-word".
