A Snapshot of Engle Center Clients

 

It may be helpful for educators to know what the students are like who visit Counseling Services. 

Here is a snapshot of the kinds of concerns our students have:student at computer

Total of 365 clients last year:

  • 40% had anxiety/stress
  • 20% had relationship difficulties
  • 20% experienced depression
  • 10% had self esteem difficulties
  • 10% had family problems
  • 10% had eating disorders
  • 4% had sexual abuse histories

 

(Because students may present with multiple complaints,

 total is greater than 100%)

 

Some additional information on the students who use our services:

  • ¾ are female.
  • Evenly divided across year in school.
  • 45% self-referred
  • Most seen 9 times or less
  • 30% on psychotropic medication
  • 6 were hospitalized (national average =5.6).
  • 2 attempted suicide (as high as 5 in past years).
  • 28 engaged in self-injury
  • 16 left school for psych reasons
  • 29% of our clients were on the Dean’s List.
  • 5% of our clients were Residence Life Staff
