Molluscum Contagiosum

Description
Molluscum contagiosum is a common, benign infection caused by a virus transmitted through close contact, including sexual contact. The condition, which shows itself as small nodules or bumps on the skin, is often found incidentally during the evaluation of other problems. As with other infections which may be sexually transmitted, sexual partners should be notified and informed about the possibility of infection.

Symptoms can arise within 2-7 weeks, with a month's incubation being typical. In children, the face, arms, chest and legs are affected. In young adults, the nodules are more commonly seen on the genitals, pubic areas and inner surface of the thighs. The diagnosis of this condition is most often made on the basis of its appearance, a pearly bump with a central dimple.

Symptoms
The virus infects cells in the outer layers of the skin. The infected person may notice any where from 1-20 pearly pink to white nodules on the lower abdomen, genitalia, and inner thighs. These bumps are usually about one millimeter in diameter and are filled with a cheesy material.

The bumps (nodules) typically are not bothersome and disappear within 9-12 months. However, treatment may hasten resolution of the problem.

Treatment
The clinician may wish to expel the core from the nodules and apply an antiseptic. Treatment may consist of removal using liquid nitrogen, scraping, silver nitrate, podophyllin or abrasive soaps. Follow-up observations are necessary to ensure that all lesions have disappeared.

Certain health habits may be helpful in preventing molluscum contagiosum. One is to avoid intimate contact with anyone who has a sexually transmitted disease or insure that adequate protective measures are taken. Being knowledgeable about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and doing self examination can also protect you. Women should have annual pap smears. Consult with your clinician if you have any concerns about STDs.
