Yeast infection (monilia) in women

Description
Candida Albicans (Monilia), or yeast, is the most common cause of vaginal infections. Changes in vaginal chemistry may cause yeast organisms, which are present in the vagina of many normal women, to multiply, producing a symptomatic infection. Women taking certain antibiotics or birth control pills, and those with diabetes and immune system disorders, are at increased risk of developing a yeast infection. Occasionally, an infection may be induced through intercourse or oral-genital contact.

Symptoms
Common symptoms of a yeast infection may include a thick, white, cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge, and/or itching at the vaginal opening. A painful or burning sensation may be experienced  during or immediately after urination or intercourse. Various diagnostic procedures including visual and microscopic examination are used to evaluate the vaginal discharge for causes of the infection.

Treatment
Vaginal medications are usually prescribed for the treatment of yeast infection. Completion of all medication is essential to ensure cure. Tampons should not be used during treatment since they will absorb the medication thereby reducing the effectiveness of the treatment.

Prevention
The following health habits may be helpful in preventing yeast infection:
  • Observe good hygiene practices to avoid unnecessary contamination from the rectum. For example: wipe front to back after urination, avoid soiled undergarments.)
  • Avoid intimate contact with anyone who has a sexually transmissible disease.
  • Wear cotton underwear and avoid wearing tight garments for extended periods of time.
  • Avoid local irritants such as bubble bath, harsh soaps, feminine hygiene sprays, douches, and deodorant tampons.
