Messiah College, a nationally recognized Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences located in south-central Pennsylvania near the state capital of Harrisburg, currently has an opening for the position of Dean, School of Business, Education and Social Sciences. The Dean provides leadership to six undergraduate departments and three graduate programs along with the Teacher Education Program, International Business Institute, and the Early Learning Center. The School has 43 full-time faculty, 64 adjunct faculty and approximately 1,066 students within 27 undergraduate major programs and three graduate programs. Job Description Department: School of Business, Education and Social Sciences Reports To: Provost Supervises: 1 Administrative Assistant, 6 Undergraduate Program Department Chairs, 3 Graduate Program Department Chairs, 3 Program Directors
Position Summary: The Dean provides academic and administrative leadership to the School of Business, Education and Social Sciences. Responsible for establishing a shared vision and determining and achieving the supporting goals and initiatives for the School. Represents the School to internal and external audiences.
Education Required: Earned Doctorate Experience Required: Senior rank in an academic discipline represented by the School; at least 5 years of administrative experience in higher education; experience developing high-impact undergraduate and/or graduate programs Skills, Characteristics Required for Position:
Special Working Conditions: Evenings and weekends as required by programming. Some travel.
1. Facilitate a shared vision among faculty and nurture the identity for the School as it relates to the College mission and objectives. Establish and implement a succinct strategic plan to advance that vision. 2. Oversee the development and implementation of creative and innovative curriculum and programming that is responsive to student and societal needs and interests. 3. Build an organizational culture of civility and collegial teamwork and foster an organizational and educational climate that advances the School in a diverse and global context. 4. Create an environment of academic vigor that motivates students, staff and faculty to excel. 5. Provide fiscal leadership by working with department chairs to plan for program growth and development within institutional parameters of stewardship. Prepare and monitor annual School budget. 6. Strengthen instructional programs through the recruitment and retention of a diverse and talented faculty and staff. 7. Seek out and develop opportunities for faculty professional development (e.g. conferences, sabbatical leave, and internal grants). Ensure faculty preparedness through dissemination of goals, priorities and relevant information. 8. Develop and oversee the implementation of assessment plans for each department in the School. Provide guidance to Department Chairs and review their performance on a regular basis. 8. Assess faculty performance by writing evaluative letters for term tenure and applications for promotions, sabbaticals, and Scholarship Chairs. Conduct Early Reviews with faculty members during their fifth semester. Approve annual development goals for faculty. 9. Advocate for the School and effectively represent faculty perspectives on academic and institutional issues. 10. Work with Development to identify potential sources of funding for School initiatives. 11. Establish and maintain effective strategic and sustaining partnerships both within and external to the College. 12. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.
1. Oversee facilities issues related to educational programming in the School. 2. Manage the process for students’ academic grievances, petitions, etc. 3. Assist department chairs with accreditation review and program evaluation (if applicable). 4. Other duties as assigned.
