PC Support "Without the Wait!"
Microsoft's NetMeeting is a great tool which allows the Helpdesk to work on your computer, provide instruction or view software problems from a remote location. Using NetMeeting for support has the potential of saving considerable time by not having to wait for the Helpdesk to arrive at your location.
Launching NetMeeting
Locate the NetMeeting icon found on your Windows Toolbar or Windows Desktop and click on it to launch NetMeeting (you can also launch NetMeeting by going to Start >> Run, typing conf in the "Open" field and click on OK).
NOTE: If you do not see the icon or typing conf in the Run window does not launch NetMeeting, you will need to install NetMeeting (a VERY simple procedure). for further instructions.
You will need to contact the Helpdesk to obtain their computer's "IP Address" (4 sets of numbers separated by decimal points - assigned to a networked computer, printer, etc, similar to the way the telephone company assigns a telephone number to the connection at your home).
Once the NetMeeting window has opened (see image at right), type in the IP address (provided by the Helpdesk). If you have had a previous NetMeeting session with the Helpdesk you may be able to select the address by clicking on the drop down arrow to the right of the Address field and then clicking on the appropriate IP address.
With the correct IP address in the Address field, press the <Enter> key on your keyboard and wait for the Helpdesk to accept the call. |

Once a connection has been established, you need to allow the Helpdesk to control your PC from their location. To do so...
1. Go to the "Tools" menu item on your NetMeeting window and select "Sharing". |
|
| 2. When the Sharing window opens, click on the "Desktop" item (#1) so it is highlighted and then the "Share" button (#2)which became active. |
|
3. Click on the "Allow Control" button (#3) in the Control area of the Sharing window.
4. Click the box next to "Automatically accept requests for control" so it is check marked (#4).
5. Click the "Close" button (#5). |
|
The Helpdesk now has access to your computer as if he or she were working at your desk. It will also be possible for them to carry out "text chat" with you, if necessary, or install or update software (typically requiring you to reboot your PC and then repeat the process described above for initiating a NetMeeting session).
When the Helpdesk is finished, he or she can shut down your NetMeeting session from where they are working. |
