SpyBot Search & Destroy
Spybot - Search & Destroy is an adware and spyware detection and removal tool. This includes removal of certain advertising components, that may gather statistics as well as detection of various key logging and other spy utilities. In addition, it also securely removes PC and Internet usage tracks, including browser history, temporary pages, cookies (with option to keep selected) and more. Click here for instructions.
SpyWare Blaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It achieves this by disabling the CLSIDs of popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a web page. This allows you to run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but it will never download or even prompt you for any of the known ActiveX controls. All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine. The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls and can be updated with the click of a button. ZipGenius lets you compress files to almost any kind of archive. ZipGenius supports more than 20 compressed archive formats, including CD/DVD-ROM image files in ISO9660 standard. This is the file compression suite you were searching for: it is free and easy to use, plus it supports more than 20 formats of compressed archives, including RAR, ARJ, ACE, CAB, SQX, OpenOffice.org documents and the excellent 7-zip. Microsoft's Media Player
A very comprehensive media player which plays most types of audio/video files.
A great alternative if Microsoft Media Player is not able to play the video format that you are trying to watch.
Quicktime Player
Apple's player for viewing files saved in Apple's QuickTime format.
Quicktime Alternative
If you want a Quicktime file format player that has more features than Quicktime and you would rather not be subject to Apple's promotion of other products, Quicktime Alternative may be just what you're looking for!
RealPlayer
A free player for opening files saved in Real Networks' "Real" format.
CDBurnerXP Pro
A full-featured CD/DVD burning application.
Media Player Classic
It has a built in DVD player with real-time zoom, support for AVI subtitles, QuickTime and RealVideo support (requires QuickTime and/or Real Player); built-in MPEG2/SVCD/DVD codec. It also supports SVCD/CVD selectable subtitles and lots more. The best part about Media Player Classic is the ability to modify the filters when playing your favorite video files
CHAT / REMOTE CONTROL SOFTWARE
NetMeeting
Microsoft's NetMeeting software is a useful utility which allows two-way text chat, video chat, file transfer, etc. One of it's most useful functions can be as a support tool. You can initiate a NetMeeting session which will allow the Helpdesk (only by your "permission") to view and troubleshoot your PC from another location, potentially decreasing the waiting period for support to arrive at your location. To use Netmeeting for a remote support session, please contact Desktop Support (sorry, off campus support not available).
FTP - REMOTE FILE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Filezilla FTP Client
For most users, the easiest way to access the contents of your O: drive from off campus is via an FTP client application. Filezilla is an FTP application that will simplify the process of accessing your network files from off campus. Available for Windows, Linux and Mac.
MISCELLANEOUS UTILTIES
CCleaner
Get a handle on the junk files that are left behind on your PC after installing/uninstalling applications, browsing the Web, etc. CCleaner is a system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)
JR Directory Printer
The JR Directory Printer Utility allows you to print a listing of every file contained within a directory and/or subdirectory(ies).
PhotoFiltre
This image retouching program allows you to adjustment an image and apply filters. Filters allow you to adjust brightness, contrast, dyed, saturation, gamma correction, and also artistic filters include watercolor, pastels, Indian ink, pointillism and puzzle effect. This application is particularly useful if you manipulate images for web pages or work with graphics regularly and do not have the time to learn PhotoShop or similar "professional level" graphics programs. Additional plugins, masks and tutorials can be obtained at no cost from the developer's web site.
CamStudio
CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs).
