Wireless Network

In the fall of 2004, we began to plan the installation of a wireless network across campus. After significant research, we settled on using Aruba equipment and installed our first wireless access point (frequently referred to as an "AP") in Larsen Student Union in the spring of 2005. Also that spring, we performed a survey of the students to see where they would like wireless. The survey was able to help us determine how to prioritize the work in this multi-year project. We defined the scope of the project to include the inside of all campus buildings. Certain outside areas are part of the next phase of Messiah's Wireless Network roll out.

The project has been broken into several phases, due mainly for two reasons: cost and support. The total cost of the project required us to spread the installation over several years. This had the added advantage of allowing us to gain experience and minimize support issues before duplicating any problems all over campus.

Notes

Personal or department access points are not allowed in buildings where the campus wireless network has been installed. Not only does maintaining a personal access point defeat the purpose of installing a campus-wide network, but it creates a security hole and may interfere with the campus network.

The wireless network equipment uses the 802.11-G standard, which provides a maximum of 54Mb bandwidth, with optional 128-bit encryption. At this time, both encrypted and unencrypted access will be available. Everyone is STRONGLY encouraged to use the encrypted access method (MC-WPA). (The unencrypted access is made available for older devices that do not support the encryption methods.)

For instructions on how to configure your computer, see Wireless Configuration.

The wireless network requires authentication (i.e. you will need to log in). As such, all users will need a Messiah College username and password to access the network. Provisions will be made for restricted public access to accommodate guest speakers and conference attendees.

Given that they operate in a manner similar to cellular phones, you can expect connection speeds slower than using a wired connection, poor performance at certain locations at certain times, and even locations which can not acquire signal. It is a goal for ITS to continue to fine tune the system to provide the best service possible. Please see the Getting Help section for who contact with comments/suggestions.
