Messiah College Hardware Support Policy

Purpose:

This policy lists the hardware that is commonly allocated to employees for use in their offices to perform their job responsbilities. Appropriate rationale must be presented before allocation is made. If ITS would choose not to provide the equipment, the employee may be permitted to purchase it from their department budget.

Desktop Computer Support:

Employees are provided with computer access in their office location. The computer provided will be a desktop model (in either a desktop or minitower case). Because laptops are considerably more expensive than desktop computers, laptops are only provided when there is sufficient job-related rationale. When a laptop is allocated for individual use, it is allocated in exchange of the desktop, not in addition to the desktop. Shared laptops are provided to entire departments based on sufficient rationale.

Printer Support:

Employees are not automatically provided a personal printer as part of the standard office computer allocation. Individual printers are provided upon request. The printer allocated for individual use is based on the rationale provided. Generally, color inkjet printers will be allocated. In some instances, it may be appropriate to allocate a personal size laser printer. The employee is responsible for purchasing and installing supplies.

Shared laser printers are generally placed one per floor. The departments who share the printer are responsible for purchasing and installing the supplies. Laser maintenance kits are supplied and installed by ITS
.

Scanner Support:

Although scanners have dropped considerably in price over the last couple of years, employees should still carefully consider their usage before requesting the allocation of a scanner. The model purchased depends on the need. Low end scanners are purchased for most purposes, while more expensive scanners are purchased as needs warrant.

Digital Camera Support:

The quality of digital cameras vary widely, as does the price. Allocation of digital cameras is based on the rationale provided. In general, medium quality digital cameras are allocated for web or class needs, while high end digital cameras are allocated as needs warrant.

PDA (Palm or Pocket PC) Support:

Employees must request PDAs with appropriate rationale. A model is purchased which allows for downloading (synchronizing) of GroupWise calendar information and email messages. Units are generally purchased with the standard memory configuration. Models are chosen so that there are add-on options available to the employee. Employees may purchase add-on features at their own expense, but will receive no support from ITS for those features. ITS recommends PDAs which run the Pocket PC operating system because of its wider range of functionality and similarities to Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

If an employee has a personally owned PDA, a copy of the calendar synchronization software may be provided by ITS upon request.
