Home Support Policy

Software:
Software purchased and used by the college does not typically include a license for home use. If the license allows for home use, then employees may feel free to borrow the installation media and install it themselves. If the license does not permit home use, then ITS will not supply the software for home use, nor will ITS purchase a copy for the employee for home use. With their supervisor's approval, an employee may possibly purchase software from their department budget. Employees may purchase software through the college bookstore to take advantage of educational discounts.

ITS does not provide support for personal home computers, including assistance with the installation of the software. For more information, see the "hardware" section below.

You may contact Media Services directly to borrow a copy of the installation media for:

  • GroupWise email (although web access is preferred by using your web browser to access GroupWise through mymail.messiah.edu )
  • Norton Antivirus (NAV)
  • Grade Book Manager (GBM)
  • Web browsers (Internet Explorer and Netscape)

Not all versions of the software will be available. Check with Media Services for specific versions and compatibility notes with your operating system (e.g. Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, etc.).

Notice about Microsoft Office: For a moderate fee, installation media for Microsoft Office software may be purchased for you to use at home. The Microsoft Office Campus Agreement (commonly referred to as the Microsoft site license) states that Microsoft Office may only be used for college work done at home. The license does not cover personal use of the software at home. It is a "work at home" right (or privilege) and is not a personal license. If you want to use the software for personal purposes, such as children's homework or family Christmas letters, then you must purchase your own license. See the Microsoft Office Home Use Information page for further information.

Hardware:
Hardware services are no longer provided by the college for personal equipment. However, the Hardware Services Manager in ITS may provide you some assistance with diagnosing the problem. This will help you know a little more about the nature of your problem as you look for service from other local computer service businesses.
