International Student Programs Orientation Schedule

Congratulations on your acceptance to attend Messiah College. The 2011 Orientation for International Students, MKs, and TCKs will be held from Sunday, August 21, to Thursday, August 25, 2011.

New International, Missionary Kids (MK), and Third Culture Students (TCK) will join the first year and transfer domestic students for the new students Welcome Week immediately following the International/MK’s/TCK’s orientation on Thursday, August 25, 2011. There will be a candlelight service and worship on Thursday evening starting at 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. (Brubaker Auditorium in Eisenhower Campus Center) parents and/or family members are invited to stay for this special event.

Below you will find a complete orientation schedule and important contact numbers. The orientation for International, MK & TCK students is designed to assist you as you begin your journey and transition to Messiah College. Throughout the orientation week you will learn about important information and about different services available to you that will be beneficial for you to know as you study in the United States.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21

12:00-4:00 p.m.

Check-In (bring travel documents and ID with you)

Eisenhower Campus Center (lobby area)

Pick up your keys and your new arrival packet at the registration table. Orientation Student Leaders and Staff will be available to assist you.

If you arrive before 12:00 pm on Sunday the 21st or after 4:30 pm on Sunday the 21st, you will need to go to Dispatch located in Eisenhower Building to pick up your keys and your new arrival packet.

   
5:45-6:00 p.m.

Meet at Larsen Student Union (the Union) to prepare for the picnic

   
6-7:30 p.m. Orientation Week Kick Off Picnic: At Larsen Student Union, Hosted by Dr. Kris Hansen-Keiffer, Dean of Student. Informal time to relax, visit with other international and Missionary Kids students, meet Messiah College staff and faculty (Parents and family members are invited to join you for this event).


7:30-9:00 p.m. Free Time: Free time with Orientation Student Leaders at the Rafiki House


MONDAY, AUGUST 22

7:00-8:00 a.m. Breakfast Dining Hall (Lottie Nelson). With Orientation Student Leaders. At this time you will also be filling out necessary documents/forms such as: form for Social Security Application, and SEVIS Registration form


8:30-9:00 a.m. Card Services: I. D. Cards, Amy Lynne Davis, Card Services Manager, Eisenhower Campus Center


9:40-11:30 a.m. Travel to Carlisle: Apply for Social Security Card Meet with Mr.Tim Killian, Supervisor SS Administration Office, Carlisle, PA (bring the forms that were provided to you this morning with you)
12:00-12:50 p.m.

Lunch: at Lottie (Dining Hall) With Orientation Student Leaders

1:00-2:00 p.m.

*Please Note* Concurrent Sessions: Session #1: F-1 Students meet with Dorca Kisare-Ressler, Director International Student Programs, for Non-Immigrant F-1 Students federal regulations and an overview of maintaining status.

Session # 2: Missionary Kids and Third Cultural Kids: Re-entry Panel Discussion: Rafiki House
Ellen Shaffer and Current Mk & TCK students.

Come share your story and share with one another at this special time to reflect on your transition to the U.S. and at Messiah College!

2:15-2:50 p.m. Payroll Office: Complete required on-campus employment forms, Ms. Belinda Conrad, Boyer 235

3:00-4:00 p.m.

 

 

Business & Financial Aid Offices: Donna Werner, student billing, health insurance deductible information. The Financial Aid Office Services and resources, general financial aid information. Boyer Hall, Room 137 (Parmer Cinema)

4:05-5:00 p.m.

Tour of Engle Health Center: Judy Groop and Dr. Phil Lawlis, Messiah College student's health and counseling information. Bring your health card and vaccination records if you have not sent them to the school. **Immediately after the tour go back to your room, and prepare for the Welcome Dinner Reception (bring traditional outfits from where you live for an evening of cross-cultural attire!)

5:30 p.m. Prepare to depart for Orchard Hill: Meet as a group in front of Larsen Student to depart for Orchard Hill.
   
6:00-8:00 p.m.

Welcome Dinner Reception Program: Orchard Hill This special welcome dinner event will be hosted by the President of Messiah College, Dr. Kim Phipps and Kelly Phipps to welcome the incoming students and their family to the college community. You don't want to miss it this special event!


8:00-9:00 p.m.

Free Time: Feel free to go "hang" out with friends and your orientation student leaders at the Rafiki House for games and sharing time. You can also go back to your room to unpack, organize your room or just relax!

TUESDAY, AUGUST 23

7:00 - 8:00 a.m. Breakfast Dining Hall (Lottie Nelson) with Orientation Student Leaders
8:15-9:00 a.m.

Registrar’s Office Services; Joanna Hadley-Evans, Assistant to the Registrar’s Office, Introduction to the Registrar's Office Services, Drop/add dates, registration and other relevant information

Bring any Questions you might have for the Q & A time.



10:20-11:00 a.m.

Campus Tour: Admissions Office personnel,Josephine Bellon: Meet at Larsen Student Union fire Alcove area.

11:00-11:15 a.m. Graystone Bank: Jennifer Reed, Graystone Bank Central Office. On campus bank, account information and option to sign up. Kline, Room 106

7:30-8:30 p.m. International Coffee House: (Fish Bowl) Hess Miller Grantham Building: Led by Orientation Student Leaders: Come "hang out" with other International and Missionary Kids. Share stories about your travel experience, share your talents, such as skits, share stories about your home abroad or your homeland, reflect on your experience thus far at Messiah College and the U.S experience with your peers, or show us your international dance style!!!
8:45-11:00 p.m. Sports Games with Orientation Studen Brubaker Auditorium: Games with orientation Student Leaders, together with current International & Mk students on campus. This is a fun time to play international sports games such as soccer (indoor) and basketball, volleybal and mingle with current students on campus!


WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24

7:00-8:00 a.m. Breakfast Dining Hall ( Lottie Nelson) with Orientation Student Leaders

8:30-9:15 a.m.

Questions & Answers Session with the Director of International Programs, Dorca Kisare-Ressler and Orientation Student Leaders, this event will take place immediately following breakfast

9:30-11:45 a.m.

Off-Campus Shopping Trip: Target,Wal-Mart, Ollie’s, and other stores.Meet in front of Larsen Student Union at 9:15 a.m.

This is your opportunity to purchase personal items such as bedding, toiletries and see the surrounding areas. Led by Orientation Student Leaders

12:00-1:00 p.m. Lunch with Orientation Student Leaders (have cash)
Off- campus. Immediately after shopping trip!

1:30-2:30 p.m.

Safety and Security on Campus: Department of Safety: Officer Skip Benson, and Officer Valerian Curd, Jordan, Room 159

3:30-5:30 p.m. Canoe Trip to Simpson Park: Wendell Witter, Director of the Issachar's Loft

(All Students who did not go on the canoe trip)
Meet at Eisenhower Circle at 5:15 p.m. to drive to park for picnic. You will be driven to the park for the picnic to join other student for team building activities sponsored by The Issachar's Loft

8:30-9:00 p.m. Free time: Hang out at the Rafiki House/or relax at a place of your choice!

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25

7:00-8:00 a.m.

Breakfast,  Dining Hall (Lottie Nelson) with Orientation Student Leaders: *Please Note* Drop off you lap tops at Fry Apartment Building B1, for PC configuration by Information Technology Services. Your lap top  will be ready for pick up late in the day after 1:15 p.m.

9:00-10:30 a.m.

Class Room Tours: Guided by Orientation Student Leaders

10:30-11:15 a.m.

Evaluation Time: Compute Lab, Frey 145. Wrap Up and Meet with the Director of International Student Programs.

11:30-12:00 p.m. Visit Dean of Student & the Associate dean of Students Offices and Residence Life  Office
12:00-1:00 p.m.

Lunch at Lottie (Dining Hall) with Orientation Student Leaders, Dorca Kisare-Ressler and Doug Wood, Assoc. Dean of Students

1:15-3:00 p.m. Purchase class materials at the Campus Store and Textbook Express, followed by lap top pick up at Fry Apartment Building B1. * Please Note* if you dropped off your lap top at Fry B1 in the morning hours for PC configuration, you may go and pick up your lat top. If you have not done your configuration, please do so during this time frame allotted.

4:00-5:00 p.m. Boyer 131: Join Planned Session by Student Involvement & Leadership Programs: Making The Transition: An Orientation for Students with Disabilities. Parents are welcome to attend.
6:15 p.m. Eisenhower Campus Center: Meet with the Director of International Student Programs, Orientation Student Leaders and family members in preparation for the candlelight service and worship time.
   
6:30-7:45 p.m. Candlelight Service and Worship: Hitchcock Arena, Sollenberger Sports Center (Eisenhower Student Campus Center) All incoming international/MK & TCK Students, family members and/or guest, Orientation Student leaders, will sit together to experience this special Messiah College annual tradition. The event will be followed by First Year & Transfer Student Gathering
8:15-9:30 p.m. Parent reception Orchard Hill, by Student Involvement and Leadership Program Office, reception hosted by President Phipps and Kelly Phipps and Parent Council

*Please Note* From Thursday, August 25th to Monday, August 29, 2011 you will join all the in-coming first year & transfer students for the 2011 Messiah College Welcome Week events.

Make your lodging reservations early! There are many other events in the area this fall which cause hotels and motels to fill up quickly.
