Mailing address change

Beginning July 1, 2012 Messiah College will no longer be able to utilize our current addressing system with the Grantham Post Office for receiving mail. Instead, all college mail will be processed through the Mechanicsburg Post Office. Because of this change in service, the Messiah College address can no longer be written as Grantham PA 17027. Instead, our address will be  Mechanicsburg PA 17055.

More specifically, college addresses will be written based on the following examples:

Departments and Employees
Name or Department
Messiah College

One College Avenue Suite XXXX

(XXXX = The box number currently used.)

Mechanicsburg PA 17055

Students
Student Name
Messiah College

One College Avenue Unit XXXX

(XXXX = The box number currently used.)

Mechanicsburg PA 17055

FAQs

What prompted Messiah College to change its mailing address?
The changes which are being implemented have been brought about in response to recent directives and changes in service from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).  These include:

  • The USPS has directed Messiah College to discontinue use of “One College Avenue” and our individualized “box” numbers if we want to continue to receive our mail through the Grantham Post Office.
  • The USPS will not permit our current address to be recognized in its online data base. The implications of this change are as follows:
  • As the USPS keeps implementing programs that verify shipping addresses, Messiah College’s current individualized box numbers are not found in the USPS database.
  • Parents, businesses, and students are calling more regularly with complaints of not finding the College’s addresses in online programs, such as Click N Ship from the USPS. In addition, it’s currently difficult to mail packages to Messiah via online retailers that now verify addresses.
  • Magazines and other publications are currently coming to our campus insufficiently addressed which hinders accurate and timely delivery.
  • Messiah College students and employees may be missing out on mailings from companies that verify our address, as our current addresses cannot be verified by their software.

How and when will this change occur?
The new college address will officially be listed as Mechanicsburg, 17055 instead of Grantham, 17027 beginning on July 1, 2012. For the most part, the change will be invisible to our day-to-day operations. However, a task force has been assembled to assist the College with the transition. If you have questions about the transition process or wish to provide information that you feel will be critical to the transition process, you may contact Dwayne Magee or Bill Althoff.

Is the Grantham Post Office closing?
Messiah College has not been notified that the Grantham Post Office is closing. As far as we know, there is no information circulating and there has been no communication regarding the future of the Grantham Post office. Questions about the Grantham Post Office should be directed to 800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777). Additional information can be found at https://www.usps.com/.

Why not wait and see what happens with the Grantham Post Office before changing the College’s mailing address?
Despite whether the Grantham Post Office remains open or not, the College is still faced with an address change because the Grantham Post Office will no longer recognize our individual box numbers and online databases do not recognize One College Avenue as a valid address. Since a change to the College mailing address is inevitable, we thought it both prudent and proactive to make all the anticipated changes at once rather than make some changes now and then have to adopt additional changes later.

Will our mail delivery times be impacted by this change?
At this time, it is unknown how the College’s mail pickup and delivery times will be affected by this change. The change we are undergoing is also a change in the provision of our mail services provided by the USPS. How and when we receive our incoming mail is largely up to them. The College will adjust mail delivery and pick up times only in the event that the USPS inhibits our ability keep our current schedule. The answer to this question may not be known or fully understood for several months after the change has been implemented.

Will this change affect our postage or shipping rates?
The change in address will not impact our current postage and shipping rates. All rates are set by the USPS and other package carriers.

Will this change affect our business with other shipping providers such as UPS or FedEx?
No, this change will not affect our shipping with over providers.  Since some other local residents have Mechanicsburg addresses already, UPS and FedEx will simply update their records for Messiah College.

Our department utilizes many items such as business cards, letterheads, envelopes, and brochures which are currently printed with the Grantham address. Will we need to have these items reprinted?
Beginning July 1, 2012, all College communications—including print and web—must reflect the new Mechanicsburg address and zip code. Additional information about the use of these items and the transitional process as it relates to print and web will be communicated to employees in the coming months. It will be important for each employee to consider the impending changeover date of July 1, 2012 as new publications are drafted and supplies need replenished between now and then. Your cooperation and patience in this matter are greatly appreciated.

Can we begin changing our addresses now?

All employees and students should now be using the new Mechanicsburg address.
