Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Building Your Website Q: How do I initiate a web project for my department? A: To initiate a web project – whether it is the design of a new site or revisions to an existing site – contact the College Webmaster at ext. 7041 or use our web form. If it is a new project or significant revisions to an existing web site, a client meeting will be scheduled to discuss the scope, objectives and timeframe of your project. Minor revisions to an existing site may be able to be handled via e-mail or by phone. Note: Please note that in order to coordinate the College’s sizable web project workload, it is important that all new web site requests first be processed through the College Webmaster. Do not contact a student webmaster or one of the College’s outside consultants directly to initiate a new project. Note: The Faculty Services Department offers web design services year-round for teaching faculty. Services include assistance with both faculty home pages and course material. For more information, call ext. 6023. Q: May I hire someone to design my web site for me? Or may I have my work study student design my web site? A: Depending on what type of web site you would like to develop – and where it is located on Messiah’s web site – it may be possible to contract a student or another outside consultant to design your department’s web site if you have the budget to do so. However, it is important that before you begin, you contact the College Webmaster to consult on the pending project. This will allow for advance discussion related to:
Q: How much will it cost to develop a web site for my department or office? A: Web design consulting services are generally offered free of charge to campus clients through the Office of Public Relations. However, if a campus client requests a particularly labor-intensive or rush job that requires special assistance from an outside vendor, there may be some fee involved. Any extra costs, however, will be discussed with (and authorized by) the client prior to the project. If you choose to contract your department’s web design externally, the cost to your department’s budget will vary by vendor. Q: How long will it take to design my web site? A: The design time required for each web site varies depending on the scope of the project and the current workload of the College Web Staff, but generally ranges between 2-6 weeks. Note: Design time can be shortened significantly if the client is able to:
A: For College Departments, Programs, and Offices – The person responsible for initiating the department’s web site should contact the College Webmaster, requesting space on the web server and access to that space. The Webmaster will talk with the requester and determine what is needed (space and location on the server) and the purpose of the web site. If a new folder is required, the College Webmaster will create a folder in the appropriate location. He will then send an email containing the location of the folder on the server to the requester, who should then forward the email to their ITS desktop support specialist, who will contact Network Services to set up an account and grant access rights to the account. In most cases, the employee’s account will be used for access to the web space. However, sometimes a work study account may be created for this purpose. Once the account is established, desktop support will notify the requester. When the requester has completed the design of their web site, he or she will need to notify the College Webmaster so that he can review the site to see if it is compatible with the College’s graphic and technical standards and he will provide a link to the College’s web site. For Student Organizations – The advisor of the organization should contact the College Webmaster, who will then proceed according to the procedure detailed above. Once the student organization’s web site is completed, they should contact the College Webmaster to link the site from the College’s web site. For Students (Personal Web Pages) – All students are given a web account on the student web server (accessible through their K: drive), where they can also store their personal documents, class assignments, etc. When a student designs a personal home page at this space, it will be listed automatically (within a week’s time) on the Student Home Pages page. For Employees (Personal Web Pages) – All employees will be given a special folder called “web” on their O: drive, which will allow them to create a personal web site. Any files that you place into this folder will be publicly viewable by anyone through the Internet. This folder is intended for the public to view your web files, if you have any. Please do not place private files into this folder. More details on this service are provided on the ITS web site. If a link to your personal web site does not appear on the listing of employee web sites, please email the College Webmaster to have your name added. Note: Organization or departmental web server space will be given for College-related web sites only. Students and employees who use their College web space to host a personal home page are expected to follow all College computing policies and procedures. Q: Will the College Web Staff assist me with a personal home page? A: Currently, the College Web Staff is not equipped with enough resources to offer assistance to campus students or employees for personal home pages. However, training is available through ITS to learn how to develop personal web pages. For a current training schedule, visit the ITS training center page. |
