International Banquet celebrates the many nations represented on campus
“I believe this is representative of God’s kingdom, and what heaven will be like” said Kevin Villegas, residence director of Miller Residence Hall, in his opening remarks at this year’s International Banquet. This annual event, sponsored by the
International Student Association (ISA) and
MuKappa (Missionary Kids), began with a fashion show of brightly colored saris, dresses, and outfits. Guests were invited to savor dishes and delicacies from around the globe, such as Indian Basmati rice, Zambian Tonga Chicken, and French apple tart.
Following the meal, guests were treated to performances including a rhythmic African dance, a heartfelt poem entitled “Agape,” and a sweet Japanese love song. As the banquet ended, the atmosphere was one of intimacy, as friends hugged, posed for pictures, and exchanged recipes. “It was an amazing display of the many nations represented at Messiah College,” reflects Patricia Coke ’06 of Stamford, Conn. “A lot of people don’t know about ISA/MuKappa and this provided them with a chance to experience where students are coming from.” At the evening’s end, the smiling faces of those gathered testified to the success of the banquet and expressed the joy that came from spending an evening soaking up the wealth of other cultures with all the senses.
