Each year, the Rafiki House welcomes students from all over campus to their lively spring barbecue. The Rafiki House is an on-campus residence designed to give international students and “missionary kids” (MKs) a sense of community, since they often experience intense culture shock upon entering the United States.

The annual barbecue, according to Martha Sipe ’06, who lived in the house last year, helps people understand what functions the Rafiki House serves on campus. “Rafiki means ‘friendship’ in Swahili,” says Sipe, “and that is what the house is—a house of friendship regardless of who you are or where you come from or what language you speak or what color your skin is. You are accepted into an amazing group of energetic, diverse, and godly individuals. Having the barbecue is one of the ways that we can extend this friendship to anyone who will take it.”
