The White by Deborah Larsen will serve as the common reading text for this year's incoming freshman class.
Incoming students to participate in new common reading
This spring, Messiah College announced that the novel The White, by Deborah Larsen, of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, will be the new common reading book for the 2006–2007 academic year. During the previous two years of the program, first-year students read James McBride’s memoir The Color of Water.
The common reading program is designed to foster a “community of learners” among first-year students and educators, and help students explore the meaning of Christian vocation on many levels. John Yeatts, associate dean of general education and common learning, explains that the program “nurtures shared conversation” while introducing students to the intellectual expectations of Messiah College.
Larsen, who is a teacher of creative writing at Gettysburg College, will give a free public lecture on campus in Brubaker Auditorium on Wednesday, September 6, 2006.
