Anna (Johnston) Bird '05 was a business admininstration major with minors in philosophy and Bible. She works for an insurance company, handling complex claims involving personal injuries in Boston, Mass., where she lives with her husband Nathan '05.
Anna enjoys playing tennis, hiking, rock climbing, cooking, and traveling.
Her favorite books are:
A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken
“My older brother recommended it to me when I left for a semester abroad in the UK, and I was touched and challenged by the journey of the author as he found love and faith and encountered deep sorrow.”
Peace Like a River by Leif Enger
”The characters in this novel are impossible not to relate to as they struggle and grow against hardships, and, ultimately, the tenderhearted love and faith they display makes this book comforting.”
The Christian Life by Sinclair Ferguson
“This book has helped me to digest basic doctrinal principles of my faith in a way that I can apply them and come to understand them better through the biblical presentation in Ferguson's book.”
“This one may not fit, but it's truly one of my favorites! The Joy of Cooking by Irma S Rombauer, Marion Rombauer Becker and Ethan Becker — for the simple reason that it can answer all my cooking questions from how to cut a mango to how to make the best sauces I've ever tasted. This book makes this amateur feel like a chef.”

Khara House ’08 is a senior majoring in English, with an emphasis in creative writing. Her pastimes include writing, singing, and making homemade crafts and cards.
“Though considered a children's book by some, " she writes, "I would recommend the book Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus. This story tells a spiritually engaging tale of development and coming to understand one's purpose in life, following the path you are meant for rather than the path others deem more ‘worthy’ or ‘valuable.’ The story is meaningful and pertinent to all levels of readers, whether you choose to share it with your children or treasure it for yourself.
"I've just started doing a lot more reading, so I'm developing some new loves, like Khaled Housseini's The Kite Runner, Jonathan Lethem's collection of short stories Men and Cartoons, and the literary criticism of D.H. Lawrence. I'm currently listening to a lot of music by bands like the Redwalls, the Black Keys, and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Getting into favorite films would be an act of futility, as I love too many to mention only a few (unless you want to get into my love of the Godfather trilogy)!”

In his spare time he enjoys reading, hiking, watching movies, and traveling.
Timothy recommends Velvet Elvis, by Rob Bell, to our readers, saying, “This book takes a narrative theological approach to the Bible, offering new insights that are not realized through the more traditional systematic theology. These new insights help to make the Bible more real for today. Rob Bell, the author also has a series of relevant DVD's that can be found at Nooma.com.” |

Karen Wildermuth ’90 was a health and physical education major at Messiah. She lives in Alloway, N.J. and is an elementary school teacher. Her favorite hobbies are reading, planting flowers, and spending time with her family.
She writes, “I recommend Lies Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free because Nancy DeMoss is an excellent Christian author. This book looks at several lies that Christian women believe and how they are at the root of most of their struggles. As Christian women living in a sinful world, we often get bogged down by lies that Satan would have us believe. This book exposes them and explains how we can be set free by God's grace and forgiveness.
"I also recommend The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace. It is a detailed portrait of a godly wife. It is not an easy book to read because it goes against what the world tells us that women should be, but it is an "excellent" book for Christian women!”
