Associate professor of art Gene VanDyke brings free Saturday morning art classes to Harrisburg for “a group of children who may not otherwise have these opportunities,” he says. Joining VanDyke each year as student teachers, Messiah art education majors in the advanced method and curriculum course teach the children art skills and creative outlets for self-expression.

Samuel believes an honest, warm environment “opens the window for the Gospel.” He says, “People aren’t looking for someone to quote Bible verses,” but for individuals with integrity who can help them with day-to-day needs.

When you understand the causes of conflict in a particular area, you can be more effective in implementing programs for economic development and humanitarian assistance, explains Katie Johnson Hamlin, who holds a master’s degree in peace-building and remediation. Hamlin’s current work for USAID (United States Agency for International Development) focuses on Latin America and the Caribbean, where she says social and economic development programs, in turn, help prevent further conflict.
