Valerie Rae Smith, associate professor of theatre and chair of the theatre department, used tulle attached to two wooden chairs on stage to represent her entanglement between the needs and changing mental aptitudes of her father, experiencing the later stages of Alzheimer's Disease, and of her young son, who is developing his own memory and story-telling abilities. The chair pictured here is one Smith remembers from her childhood. It first belonged to her grandfather — who also developed early-onset Alzheimer's —then her father, and now it graces her own home, and the stage. |
