Donovan Roberts Witmer ’97 captures art student
Sonya Berg ’05 painting “on air.” Sonya practices her brushstrokes on a four– by five–foot plexiglass canvas, as the cover image for the winter 2005 issue of The Bridge begins to take shape.
The making of the cover was truly an exercise in art innovation, as graphic designer Scott Trobaugh, Witmer, and Berg experimented with different paint mixtures to find one that adhered properly to the unconventional canvas. The reflective quality of plexiglass also presented the artists with a challenge, eventually necessitating dark curtains draped over windows and even Witmer’s tripod, which was visible on the surface of the plexiglass.
The Warehouse, located just off-campus, which houses 24-hour studio space for senior art majors, easily accommodated the three–hour photo shoot. “Our goal was to involve readers in the artistic experience,” says Rebecca Ebersole Kasparek ’96, editor for the Office of Publications. “We wanted to show that art is a dynamic process and that it involves the viewer or listener in dynamic ways.”
