Behind the Scenes of Godspell

On Miller Stage, student actors sing and dance their way through a
comical, contemporary rendition of the 1971 musical Godspell. |
During January Term, I had the opportunity to choreograph the theatre department’s production of Godspell. Creating a contemporary version of the 1971 classic musical proved no easy task, and the cast and crew devoted three intensive weeks to nonstop rehearsals. For us, the production process involved, among other adjustments, enhancing some musical numbers, incorporating ensemble and featured dance pieces, and redistributing lines among unconventional characters. We relied on creative energy and imagination to convey spiritual significance, the fuel for the entire show.
Contributing to Godspell ‘s production and working alongside such inventive, artistic people has been a highlight of my senior year. They certainly taught me a great deal about collaboration and innovation. The entries that follow chronicle our day-to-day progress in crafting the show. We hope you enjoy this backstage look into the making of Godspell!
