Leadership Summits

Messiah College Student Leadership Summit

Developing Students of Influence

Leadership Summits have occurred at Messiah College for a number of years. In the fall of 2009 this program was formalized in order to provide a common experience whereby student leaders can learn, grow, and develop. In addition, the program aims to encourage students to develop intentional relationships with peers that are leading in a number of contexts as well as one educator who is not their advisor/supervisor. We hope to model the importance of community and relationships across functional areas and roles.

Summits include over 200 students that are currently serving in a key leadership role. These students are involved in Residence Life, Student Involvement & Leadership Programs , Multicultural Programs, College Ministries, Athletics, The Collaboratory and the Agape Center. Students are assigned to a Leadership Cluster that includes 8-10 other student leaders and one educator that serves as a Cluster Facilitator.  All 200 students meet several times a year for a common experience. In addition, the Leadership Clusters meet several times a semester for students to share their experiences with each other, provide mutual support, and to provide intentional time and space for students to reflect on their experiences.

The following are the key learning objectives for 2011-2012:

1. Leadership transcends role, title, and position and is purposeful influence.
2. God calls all Christians to influence; therefore, God calls all Christians to lead.
3. Leadership includes both persuasion and service.
4. Leadership can be taught, developed, and learned.
5. Leadership is a result of understanding calling, nurturing character, and developing competencies.
6. Leadership development efforts occur in many contexts at the College.
