More than 800 new students arrive
Messiah College welcomed new and returning students to campus over the past week. Parents Council volunteers were on hand to welcome new students and their families on "move-in day" last Thursday. Alumni Council volunteers welcomed members of the Class of 2011 as "future alumni" on Monday. Classes began Tuesday, September 4. Please pray for our students, faculty and staff as they begin a promising new academic year.
President's State-of-the-College Address

The ceremonial launch of the new academic year for college employees was a Community Day gathering held on August 28. Nearly 500 faculty and staff participated in worship, viewed a video celebrating last year's highlights, and heard President Phipps' State of the College address. 2007 Alumni Award
Recipients Announced
Messiah College and the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations is pleased to announce five individuals who have been selected to receive this year's annual alumni awards:
The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award goes to two sisters as co-recipients - Alvera (Hershey) Stern '64 and Lenora (Hershey) Stern '65. Both are recently retired from dedicated public service careers at the federal and state levels working on substance abuse and mental health issues.
The Young Alumni Achievement Award goes to Tiffany Eberle Kreiner '98. Tiffany completed a PhD. at the University of Wisconsin, received a prestigious fellowship at the University of Notre Dame, and currently teaches in the English Department at Wheaton College.
The Alumni Christian Service Award goes to Rev. John Hawbaker '65 for significant faithful service in the Brethren-in-Christ church denomination as pastor, bishop and servant leader.
The Alumni Appreciation Award goes to Clifford Jones. As a prominent civil leader in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Cliff has been an advocate of Messiah College, mentored interns and graduates, taught as an adjunct faculty member, and established a scholarship fund for current students serving the local community.
Alumni Awards to be presented
at October 18 Student Chapel
Alumni Awards will be presented during student chapel on Thursday, October 18 at 9:30 a.m. in Brubaker Auditorium as part of Homecoming Weekend. Lenora Stern, John Hawbaker and Cliff Jones are expected to be in attendance. [Alvera Stern is current serving MCC in Africa and Tiffany Eberle Kreiner had prior commitments. Both are unable to attend.]
Alumni and friends are invited to attend the chapel and then meet with the recipients at a special reception in their honor immediately following the chapel to be held in the Private Dining Room, Eisenhower Campus Center
Professor's new book examines
Amish commitment to forgiveness

Biblical & Religious Studies Department chair, Dr. David Weaver-Zercher '83 in conjunction with two other authors has written a new book entitled, Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy. Published by Jossey-Bass and scheduled for release on September 21, the book explores the Amish's response after the Nickel Mines tragedy. Discount pre-orders are available through Amazon.com.
Weaver-Zercher will also give a lecture entitled "Amish Grace: Reflections on the Nickel Mines School Shooting One Year Later" on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. The lecture is free and open to the public. David will also present during Family Weekend on Saturday, September 29 at 10:30 a.m. in Boyer Hall, Room 131.

The Messiah Business Alumni Association is hosting its next breakfast event on Tuesday, September 18 from 7:00-8:15 a.m. at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey. Featured speaker will be Andrew Samuel '84, Chairman, CEO and President of Graystone Bank.

Spiritual formation in college students
Evie Telfer, Associate College Pastor, will speak about Messiah's efforts to support students' spiritual formation and the role parents may have in spiritual nurturing at this stage in sons and daughters lives. As part of Family Weekend, the annual Parents Prayer Breakfast will be held on Saturday, September 29, at 8:30 a.m. in Lottie Nelson Dining Room.
Featuring a full buffet menu, the cost is $5 per person. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Ticket Office at (717) 691-6036. Due to limited seating we ask that only parents attend this event.

2007 Schedule has something for everyone.
Mark you calendar now for October 19-20 and check the Homecoming schedule for more than 40 different events including class reunions, department and special receptions, arts & cultural activities, and athletic events. We've expanded the Falconfest tailgate picnic, which attracted over 400 persons last year. The day culminates in an exciting rematch of the teams from last year's national men's championship soccer game, Wheaton vs. Messiah.
Construction of new
President's Residence begins.

In order to better accommodate the hospitality and entertainment responsibilities of a modern college president, the Board of Trustees has initiated and is fully-funding the construction of a new President's Residence from their personal funds.
Messiah's new President's Residence will be located on the property of the former Musser farm near the entrance to campus. The facility will include both private living quarters for the president's family and increased space for entertaining guests and campus groups.

New Director of Development Named
Jon C. Stuckey, Ph.D., was recently named Director of Development. Jon arrived at Messiah in 2000 as the Director of Foundation Relations and Sponsored Programs. Jon has led numerous successful grant funding efforts, developed relationships with key benefactors, and worked in government relations. He replaces Ken Hall, who assumed development duties at Bucknell University.
