Charles Marsh
Charles Marsh, respected author and
professor, will deliver Messiah’s
Commencement address
Author Charles Marsh to address graduating class

Keeping with President Kim Phipps’ inaugural year theme of “Created & Called for Community,” respected author and professor Charles Marsh will deliver the Commencement address on this topic to the graduates of the Class of 2006. A gifted writer and storyteller, Marsh will weave his personal account of growing up in a small southern town during the civil rights movement with his understanding of the religious implications of that critical time in our nation’s history.

Marsh is a professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia. He is also director of the Project on Lived Theology, a research initiative designed to understand how theological commitments shape the social patterns and practices of religious communities. His interest in understanding people’s religious commitments and convictions stems from his childhood as a minister’s son living in Alabama and Mississippi during the final years of Jim Crow. This experience, combined with his theological beliefs, has inspired Marsh to author several books, including
God’s Long Summer: Stories of Faith and Civil Rights, his memoir The Last Days: A Son’s Story of Sin and Segregation at the Dawn of a New South, and his most recent work, The Beloved Community: How Faith Shapes Social Justice, from the Civil Rights Movement to Today.

Commencement will be held May 13 at 10 a.m. on the baseball field of Starry Athletic Complex. The latest schedule of events for Commencement can be found at www.messiah.edu/commencement.
