From the president

Dear Parents:

The spring season is a beautiful time on Messiah’s campus as the trees and flowers come into bloom. Though the warm weather seems to beckon students outdoors, they are especially busy this time of the year as they look forward to Service Day activities, present research in their academic area during scholarship days, complete their coursework, prepare for exams, and, for seniors, anticipate graduation and life after Messiah College.

It is an honor to be entrusted with the education of your daughters and sons, and I hope their Messiah College experience is having “an unspeakable impact” on their life. I invite you to read in this issue’s feature article how men’s soccer coach Dave Brandt articulates his desire for Messiah’s soccer program to contribute to this type of transformational educational experience. Though he’s one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, Dave measures success by far more than championships. (It’s worth noting, however, that he has coached his team to five national titles!) Dave’s coaching and leadership philosophy reflects his strong desire to build character among his players and is a shining example of the unique mission of Messiah’s athletics program to “develop Christian character while in pursuit of athletic excellence.”

Excellence is a worthy goal, one which faculty, administrators, and coaches desire for your student whether in the classroom, on an athletic field or performance stage, and eventually across the mission field of his or her chosen vocation. Commencement speaker Philip Yancey will reinforce this commitment as he encourages graduates to pursue lives of mission, prayer, and hope. Yancey, a best-selling author, eloquently addresses issues of faith, and we look forward to his address at the commencement celebration.

Many of you will come to campus in the next few weeks; some to take your son or daughter home for the summer months and others to celebrate graduation with your senior. For the parents of our graduates, I look forward to celebrating this important milestone with your family on May 19!

I am grateful for the privilege of sharing in the educational journeys of your sons and daughters, and I look forward to continued partnership with you.

Warm regards,
Kim S. Phipps
President
