Parenting College Students 101: Helpful Advice Resources

Sending a son or daughter to college is a challenging transition for both parents and adolescents. Navigating the parent-child relationship during the college years requires wisdom and adaptation.

Conversations (and prayers) with parents who have made or undergone
this journey can be helpful. Parents Council members and the staff from the Division of Student Affairs are available and willing to encourage and assist any Messiah parent or guardian who has questions or desires advice.

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations has found several books available in the general press that may be helpful to parents. Consult your favorite local bookstore or online book-buying service for these or other titles.
  • Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years by Karen Levin Coburn & Madge Lawrence Treeger
  • You’re on Your Own (But I’m Here if You Need Me) by Marjorie Savage
  • Don’t Tell Me What to Do, Just Send Money: The Essential Parenting Guide to the College Years by Helen E. Johnson& Christine Schelhas-Miller
  • Almost Grown: Launching Your Child from High School to College by Patricia Pasick
If you have another parenting resource to recommend or wish to give feedback on any of the above sources, please contact the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations at (717) 796-5252 or e-mail Parents@messiah.edu.
