May term
Cross-Cultural
![]() Using opportunities for both theoretical and experiential learning, the Philadelphia May term cross-cultural course exposes students to the diverse cultures existing in large American cities. The class provides students with an opportunity to explore the city of Philadelphia and tour various cultural activities and exhibits. The course deals with the history, religion, church, family life, and literature of various ethnic groups. Students reside and study at the Messiah College Philadelphia Campus, engage in the community through service at various organizations and participate in many city events and opportunities. May Term In a "core" session, all students explore the biblical bases for majority-minority relations, investigate ethnocentrism and racism, learn how to relate across cultural boundaries, and study the issues of interdependence, diversity, pluralism, and cultural relativism. At other times, students are divided into "satellite" groups that study a specific urban ethnic group. Enrollment permitting, there are satellites for African-American, Asian-American, and Latin American cultures. Students are also assigned a service location where they will volunteer and participate daily. Click here for registration and billing information about these courses. |
