The M. Louise Aughinbaugh Gallery and the Messiah College community
offer their profound gratitude to Eileen White and Lois
Dodd. Their generosity has made possible this promised gift of
exceptional preparatory drawings, maquettes, and sculptures representing
the life work of Bill White to the Department of Visual Arts.
The collection is comprised of approximately 500 outstanding examples
of life drawings and preliminary studies for work in a wide
range of styles representing influences gathered over a lifetime of
continuous study. Additionally, the 135 wax, plaster, and clay
maquettes and cast sculptures exemplify Bill’s exceptional talent for
capturing gesture and line and will help our students understand in
a vivid way the hard work and the constant re-examination of ideas
that is involved in working toward excellence. To remember and honor Bill, we are mounting this exhibition as an introduction to the work of Bill White. Thus we have cut a wide swath through the overall collection of artwork with the promise of more detailed examinations of individual works and ideas to come in future years. The work on view represents six decades of the growth and maturity of an artist who deeply believed in the value of the creative life without regard for the possibility of earthly rewards. Access to original artwork and scholarship is an essential element of liberal arts education. The mission of the M. Louise Aughinbaugh Art Gallery is to present an innovative exhibition program that complements and enhances the College’s academic offerings, to foster interdisciplinary thinking and studying, and to serve as a catalyst for the creation of new work in the visual arts; secondly, to collect and preserve a permanent art collection for study, research, and exhibition; and finally, to awaken the community to the richness and diversity of the human experience through the medium of art. Our College art collection is small, yet growing; dependent largely upon the generosity of collectors and donors. We are proud to showcase the artworks throughout the College campus and in periodic exhibitions, such as this installation A Legacy of Form: Bill White. We appreciate the strong, positive public response to each permanent collection acquisition and sincerely hope that you will consider supporting the visual arts at Messiah! Sincerely, Kim S.
