Evaluation/Assessment Of Student Teacher by College Supervisor

While ongoing observation of and dialogue about the student teacher's performance is expected throughout the Professional Semester, specific evaluation/assessment is required of the college supervisor as follows:

  • Formal Observation/Critique of a Lesson
Done weekly and submitted to the DTE's office by Monday of the following week
  • Planning Check
Done 2nd-3rd week of student teaching by college supervisor
  • Mid-Term Evaluation/3-Way Conference
Messiah College Student Teaching Evaluation Form and PDE-430 Done with all student teachers about half way through the experience. The student teacher and co-op collaborate with the supervisor on the Messiah College form, but the PDE 430 form is completed by the supervisor alone and reviewed with and signed by the student teacher. For ECE/Elementary and Secondary student teachers, this mid-point assessment is done at the mid-point of their single assignment. For Art, HPE, and Music, this assessment is done at the end of the first student teaching placement.
  • Final Evaluation
Messiah College Student Teaching Evaluation Form and PDE-430 Done for each student teacher as part of their credentialling activities. The student teacher and co-op collaborate with the supervisor on the Messiah College form, but the PDE 430 form is completed by the supervisor alone and reviewed with and signed by the student teacher.
  • Grading of Student Teachers
The student teaching experience is graded as "P" for passing of "F" for no credit. Students must pass student teaching and all related coursework required for certification in order to qualify for certification candidacy. In the Messiah College pass/fail system, passing requires performance at a level that would be graded at least as "C-" in a traditional letter-grading stystem. Courses taken during the five weeks prior to full-time student teaching are letter-graded. The final grade for student teaching will be recorded for all students by the Director of Teacher Education after the final evaluation and PDE 430 forms have been filed by the college supervisor.

Copies of the evaluation forms are provided in the student teaching syllabus.
