GPAs and Other Requirements
Pay close attention to the stated requirements, especially GPAs, for admission to the Teacher Education Program and to the Professional Semester. Be diligent in your attention to your academic status. It is important to note that, while many certification areas/majors may be able to graduate in their major area of study without student teaching and certification, the Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Health & Physical Education, Family & Consumer Science, Art, and Music Education majors cannot meet requirements for the major unless they student teach, so maintaining academic excellence is critical.
In other words, if you do not meet all requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program, including the 3.0 GPA, both cumulatively and in your major, your pursuit of a given major, graduation, and teacher certification will not be possible.
Exceptions to the requisite 3.0 GPA level are rare but an established Teacher Education Program policy may allow students not yet admitted to the Program, but who have met all requirements for admission except the 3.0 GPA (cumulative and/or major) to be permitted to enroll in 300 and 400 level courses if GPA is at least 2.8 in both areas. If you believe that you qualify for provisions made under this policy, you should send an e-mail request to the Director of Teacher Education, asking for a review of your file. Permission for use of this policy must be requested through the Director of Teacher Education. You may not self determine that you qualify for this policy, but must have written permission from the DTE's office to do so, and file an appropirate document of agreement with the TEP office. (See Policy)
NOTE: Your degree audit, available to you via MCSquare, shows both GPAs - cumulative and major, so check there for a quick reference on your academic progress.
