2.8 Policy Option Concerning Interpretation of PA Guidelines

The following policy was approved by the Teacher Education Committee, Feb. 26, 2004.

The Teacher Education Committee has established this policy and related guidelines for allowing a student who has not yet been admitted to the Teacher Education Program to enroll in a 300 level course which lists admission to the program as pre-requisite if the student meets the following requirements:

  • Student must have at least a 2.8 GPA (cumulative and in major).

  • Praxis I scores must be on file and reflect passing level results.

  • Application for admission to the Teacher Education Program must be on file with the Director of Teacher Education’s office and will include these items: all clearances, positive faculty and advisor references, any input from department/academic office/student life that is available

  • Student’s signature on a disclaimer statement that indicates that permission to enroll in a given 300 level course does not guarantee full admission to the program and/or professional semester. Additionally, this will acknowledge that the student knows that he/she will need to meet all requirements, as stated, prior to being considered for enrollment in the Professional Semester (i.e. a student with a GPA of 2.8 will need to raise that to the required 3.0 before being approved for the Professional Semester.

  • This is a one-semester opportunity. Students who do not have a 3.0 GPA at the end of that semester will be denied opportunity to continue.

  • TEC delegates responsibility to DTE for implementing policy.

This policy is open only to students who do not have the requisite 3.0 GPA in the cumulative and/or major averages, but who otherwise meet requirements for admission.

Arrangements for utilizing this policy option are available only through consultation with the Director of Teacher Education.
