Genna graduated from Messiah in 2017. She is currently teaching fourth grade ESL (English as a Second Language) at Esperanza Academy Charter School in Kensington Philadelphia PA. Genna's advice for future teachers is, "One thing you no one can prepare you for is the reality of teaching once you leave college. It's no surprise by now that there are intense demands, behaviors, expectations, etc. There will be parts of teaching that wear you out, but find the parts you love and give your energy towards that. My students have been beacons of light in the midst of the chaos, even when their behavior is tiresome. Don't give up on "that" kid because many students that I couldn't imagine dealing with have become some of my greatest teaching memories and closest student relationships. IT IS WORTH IT. The work teachers do is always worth it, whether you feel like it at the time or not. There will be students you may not even know you had an impact on. Do your best to show up everyday with a renewed view of each student, give them a chance to do right, and show them that you aren't giving up on them. It will pay off."
