Lindsey Holtzman ’06 Be a mentor and pay it forward

“Because I am constantly planning or executing multiple events at once, no day is ever the same. Every day is different and that’s refreshing!” Lindsey Holtzman, who enjoys the lack of monotony in her positions, graduated in 2006 as a Communication major with an emphasis in Public Relations and Advertising. Since graduating, Holtzman has held jobs in event planning for giant corporate events and weddings, putting her public relations skills to great use.

Directly following graduation, Holtzman was hired to assist in event planning at Felicita wedding destination resort in Harrisburg, Pa. After a few months, she took another job with the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC as an event planner. “One of my professors at Messiah told me about the position with the Harrisburg Regional Chamber. After interviewing, they extended an offer to me. I would say that I have been incredibly blessed in being able to find jobs that I enjoy.”

As Director of Events, Holtzman plans and executes all events held throughout the year, oversees two event planning committees, creates the event budget, solicits companies in the region for event sponsorships, and is extensively involved in event marketing strategies. “One of the events that I’m currently planning is our annual Spring Gathering. This year, we are incredibly excited to have Daymond Joh, one of the sharks on NBC’s TV show Shark Tank, as our keynote speaker.”

Holtzman appreciates the emphasis on responsibility and people-skills that her education at Messiah instilled in her. “I make a point to show those around me a great deal of respect and to listen before speaking. If you respect and show those around you that you care about what they have to say, they often reciprocate the behavior. It’s so important to show the love of Christ to those that you work with, report to and are just meeting for the first time.” She believes that creating strong and lasting relationships with those you work with is imperative to success in the career field.

Several mentors have been important to Holtzman as her career has developed, and she has a desire to pay it forward. “Never be afraid to take wisdom and advice from others. And when you start to see the results of adhering to good advice, mentor someone else. The results of being helped and helping others are invaluable!”
