This course covers the physical therapy patient/client management model applied to the cardiac and pulmonary practice patterns. Emphasis is on coronary artery disease (CAD), congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and their effects on patient outcomes. Case studies integrate psychosocial issues, pathophysiology, diagnostic imaging, pharmacology and nutrition. Co-requisite: PHTH 705L

This course covers the physical therapy patient/client management model as it is affected by dysfunction with the integumentary and other systems and any associated practice patterns. Students are introduced to management of wounds, ulcers and burns. Dysfunction related to the lymphatic, endocrine and metabolic, genital and reproductive, gastrointestinal, renal and urologic, hematologic, hepatic and biliary and immune systems. Case studies integrate psychosocial diagnostic imaging, pharmacology and nutrition. Co-requisite: PHTH 725L

In this course, students have the opportunity to review and critically analyze appropriate research designs through an in-depth literature review. Student research groups initiate their projects by developing a research question and following up with the scientific process. Students submit a research proposal to the College’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) for approval.

The characteristics of the geriatric population and associated concerns that warrant physical therapy are addressed in this course. In addition, health promotion, wellness and fitness are also covered. Specific assessments, intervention strategies, management techniques and discharge planning of the client/patient are considered. This course is a combination of classroom and clinical site education that reinforces knowledge and translates didactic learning into clinical practice in the areas of ethics, verbal, written and interprofessional communication. Students have opportunities to practice treatment skills that may include tests, measures, mobility training, therapeutic exercise prescription, pharmacological assessment, cardiopulmonary assessment, modalities and education.

This is the second of three continuum of care courses. This course focuses on rehab and home health physical therapy settings. This course continues to use the 4 planned case studies in the areas of stroke, below knee amputation, spina bifida and total knee replacement to compare and contrast possible client/patient progression and recovery. Students learn about the transition between settings, associated client/patient changes, setting-specific assessment and treatment techniques, interprofessional collaboration, discharge strategies and related documentation. Students receive training in billing, managerial skills and public relations. Co-requisite: PHTH 746L

Students practice specific skills related to rehab and home health settings within on-site exercise labs and the Universal Apartment to promote execution of selected components of the patient/client management models. This course incorporates 4 planned case studies in the areas of stroke, below knee amputation, spina bifida and total knee replacement. Competency is assessed in setting-specific skills. Co-requisite: PHTH 746

This is the third of three continuum of care courses. This course focuses on the outpatient physical therapy setting. This course continues to use the 4 planned case studies in the areas of stroke, below knee amputation, spina bifida and total knee replacement to compare and contrast possible client/patient progression and recovery. Students learn about setting-specific assessment and treatment, including return to work models of care. Students work to become proficient in the fast-paced environment that requires treatment of multiple clients simultaneously in a timely manner throughout the workday. Students receive training in billing, managerial skills and public relations. Co-requisite: PHTH 756L

This course provides preparation for the comprehensive written and lab practical assessments.  Students demonstrate competency of the content learned and practiced in Year 1 and part of Year 2. (4 semesters, 1 Winter Intensive). The culminating experience provides a profile of student competence in cognitive, affective and psychomotor domain as it relates to the Program’s curriculum and to the physical therapy profession.

This course provides the student with opportunities to examine the role of culture in health and wellness as it relates to self, clients/patients, physical therapy and local and global health care arenas. Students use technology, students to interact with diverse individuals and to practice culturally sensitive practices and competencies. Cultural competency assessments and research expand student learning and abilities. Students discuss a faith-based perspective and relate it to other religions.

This course promotes the progression of the Thesis Research Project as students refine and implement the methodology by collecting and organizing the data for analysis. Ongoing faculty advisor mentoring occurs throughout the semester to provide enriching discussion, feedback and direction.

This course supports the learning in PT Profession III: Cultural & Global Diversity. This course provides students with opportunities in international health care service and faith in action through immersion in other cultures. Christian service learning is the foundation for this experience.

PHTH 751 | 2 credits

This 8-week full time clinical experience reinforces knowledge and translates didactic learning into clinical practice. Emphasis is on professional practice and patient management using the performance dimensions of supervision/guidance, quality, complexity, consistency and efficiency. By the end of this clinical experience, the student will be at Advanced Beginner Performance Level or higher as defined by the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI).

This course provides an evidence based manual therapy approach toward evaluation and management of musculoskeletal conditions. Emphasis will be on enhancing the student's clinical reasoning and manual therapy skills. Manual therapy techniques include: soft tissue (myofascial release, active release, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization), muscle energy, strain-counter strain, cupping, mobilization with movement, nerve gliding, and HVLA thrust manipulation. This course explores the external forces that drive social, legislative and economic influences in the delivery of physical therapy services and healthcare in the US. The course addresses topics such as advocacy, legal practice standards, professionalism, global healthcare, and expanding health care specialization and services.

In this course, students learn about the eclectic role of the physical therapist in the areas of health promotion, wellness and fitness. Students develop educational materials for the community and perform a professional educational presentation.

PHTH 781 | 2 credits

This course addresses physical therapy in various specialty areas. Students explore physical therapy practice in sports, women’s health, lymphedema, oncology, hand therapy, obesity management, complimentary therapies and aquatics. As part of the learning process, students interview select specialty therapists to gain more in-depth knowledge.

PHTH 788 | 4 credits

This course covers the managerial and supervisory aspects of and the business practices in physical therapy. This consists of the following related topics: provision of health services, values and ethical principles, external oversights, and business acumen. Students apply the business principles and practices to develop a business plan to start a niche physical therapy practice.
