Damian Savarino, music and stage director

The Opera Workshop ensemble is offering a “Death By Aria” concert, with piano accompaniment, of beautiful opera and operetta selections from works by Bizet, Copland, Gilbert & Sullivan, Massenet, Menotti, Puccini and Robert Ward.  This concert will be livestreamed and is accepting a limited audience.  Please come and hear some of the most talented young opera singers at Messiah University!

The Messiah University Opera Workshop was founded in 2006 by Dr. Damian Savarino and is currently under his direction.  In the last decade, Opera Workshop has presented many opera scenes programs as well as fully produced one and two-act operas, both with orchestra and with piano accompaniment.  Works have included Gianni Schicchi (Puccini), Trial By Jury (Gilbert & Sullivan), and The Old Maid and the Thief (Menotti), The Telephone (Menotti), and The Night Bell (Donizetti).  In 2014, Dr. Savarino’s production of The Medium (Menotti) received 1st Prize in the National Opera Association Opera Production Competition.  In 2016, Dr. Savarino’s production of The Tender Land (Copland), in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Dance, received two awards: 2nd Prize in the National Opera Association Opera Production Competition and 2nd Prize in the American Prize Opera Performance Competition.
