If you have a passion for teaching a broad age range of students with diverse learning needs, this major is for you.

Our early childhood education major develops your abilities to think, solve problems and make decisions in critical areas of education such as instructional planning, instructional delivery, assessment and classroom management. You’ll have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of an academic subject of your choice by completing a 12-credit disciplinary focus.

Completion of your dual teaching certification requirements in Pre-K and special education qualifies you to work in a regular educational setting in Pre K-4 or as a special education teacher in preschools and elementary, middle and high schools. The special education certification is best for those who want to teach special education in low incidence populations (typically more severe disabilities), high schools, early intervention or postsecondary programs, or who want to pursue careers in speech and language pathology, behavior or special education policy.

As a student in the early childhood education program, you’ll take classes in areas including special education, language development, child development and children’s literature. Those who complete the early childhood education minor are eligible for Private Nursery School Certification through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The education minor provides you with opportunities to pursue your professional aspirations, explore areas of personal interest and prepare for graduate study. The education minor does not lead to teacher certification.

Courses in the socio-cultural perspectives on education minor allow you to explore social and theoretical perspectives along with curricular and instructional perspectives. To complete the socio-cultural perspectives on education minor, you will also participate in a required educational field experience that meets your personal interests.

A minor in special education is best for those who want to work with individuals with disabilities across the lifespan in settings other than schools.

The speech and language pathology minor is a pre-professional course of study designed to prepare you to pursue graduate degrees in speech and language pathology or audiology. Pair the minor with any major to meet your unique interests and to expand future employment options. Graduate programs in speech and language pathology accept students from varied majors who have fulfilled their pre-requisite courses.

As an education major or student specializing or minoring in TESOL, you’ll study theoretical and applied linguistics as you prepare by using methods and tools from contemporary linguistic theory. Students who are already pursuing an education certification are also eligible for the Pennsylvania ESL Program Specialist (K-12) Certificate.

The TESOL certificate will successfully equip you to engage in service or vocation with English learners. Earning a TESOL certificate offers additional employment opportunities for graduates, as most job postings for teaching English to adults (both domestically and internationally) list a TESOL certificate as a requirement of the position.
