Keep in mind
It is okay that your major is Undeclared!
- Don't fall for the assumption that you need to have it all figured out before stepping foot on campus.
- Take time to explore your options.
- Talk to your Academic Advisor.
- Visit the Career and Professional Development Center to assist you in this process, starting with your first year.
- We want to help you identify your strengths and interests and translate these into meaningful opportunities.
Whether you are unsure about a choice between a few majors, or have no idea how to begin narrowing down choices to evaluate more deeply, we recommend that you take time to complete the FOCUS assessment, which is intended to help you identify areas to explore based on your interests and skills.
- Review the FOCUS overview first, then you may complete the FOCUS assessment.
If you have identified a couple of major choices in which you are really interested, take some time to review some more detailed information about the kinds of opportunities within those fields.
REMEMBER, your goal is not to pick a job/career and then pick a major, but rather select a major which has content and opportunities that are of interest to you.
Once you are in the major, you will have the opportunity to talk more with your department and advisor about preparing for and testing out different opportunities!
We would recommend that, as you read and process this information, you do so in 15-30 minute blocks of time, and that you keep notes about what interests you, as well as what concerns you might have with each major.
