If you are interested in pursuing a career as an elementary teacher, Messiah’s elementary education (PK-4) track is designed for those who have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education who wish to pursue teaching certification. Students who are able to secure a full-time or long-term substitute teaching position while pursuing their teaching certification may apply for the Pennsylvania intern certification program.
Messiah’s Master of Education with a degree track in elementary education prepares individuals with a bachelor’s degree in an area other than education to pursue a career as a teacher and to sit for the PA Level I teaching certification examination. Students will learn to design developmentally appropriate learning experiences, assessments, classroom management systems and how to effectively collaborate with parents and other educational professionals.

Students at Messiah University may also apply for the Pennsylvania intern certification program. This professional certificate entitles you to fill a full-time or long-term substitute teaching position in your content area while pursuing teaching certification.

Messiah’s teaching certification programs are accredited by the PA Department of Education. Students who successfully complete this graduate-level coursework and field hours can apply to obtain the PDE PK-Grade 4 Teaching Certification.
The curriculum for the M.Ed. in elementary education is designed for busy professionals and includes both theory and field experience.
