APPLY TO MESSIAH

Students

As we know, the world is becoming smaller and at the same time more complex. The need for service-minded global citizens has become greater. This is where you, as a Messiah student, comes into the picture! The Agape Center for Local & Global Engagement provides four distinct areas, all of which include service and credit-bearing opportunities. We want our students to serve and learn through safe, hands-on experiences by engaging the surrounding Harrisburg neighbors and our neighbors around the world. Check out the opportunities below for you to get plugged in!

Local Outreach

Local Outreach is a student organization that works on a regular, ongoing basis with the Greater Harrisburg area, partnering with organizations that are invested in their communities and working towards holistic, capacity-building efforts.

Service Trips

The Agapé Center sponsors both Domestic & International service trips.  Our team works with a variety of community partners to coordinate domestic trips during academic breaks and international trips during late May/early June.  Through service, we hope students will experience enriching and challenging growth, which will help to foster learning of oneself, of the needs of others and of the role that service plays in society through a lens of Christian faith.

Local (Domestic) Cross Cultural Courses

Global Cross Cultural Courses

Cross-cultural courses are three-week intensive experiences led by Messiah University faculty. They include study of the society through lectures and readings, as well as either a homestay and/or community engagement activities. A range of courses with a variety of discipline focuses will immerse students in a different culture. Additionally, a cross-cultural course may fulfill a student's ELI requirement and one 3-credit language course.

Local (Domestic) Semester Long Study Abroad Programs

Global Semester Long Study Abroad Programs

Spend a semester living, serving and studying in another culture. You can visit our neighbors to the south in Latin America, travel across the ocean to Africa, Asia, Europe, or discover educational adventures right here in the United States. Prepare to grow academically and spiritually as you take your first steps to becoming a global citizen. Semester long programs typically last for 10-12 weeks at program partner institutions.

Service Day

Each year on Service Day classes are cancelled to give students & employees an opportunity to serve together as an expression of our faith commitment to service at Messiah University.  Service Day 2023 will look a bit different this year.  Area M Special Olympics has decided to cancel due to Covid; however, we will still proceed with serving our community through a multitude of service projects both on & off campus.  We will post updated details as they become available.
